Children's Eyecare

We are a very child-friendly practice and we strongly recommend all children should have their eyes examined at least annually, starting from the age of six months. However if you are concerned about your child's eyes or if there is a family history of eye problems then please do contact us.
 Visual problems can have a significant impact on a child’s learning and social development. Identifying visual problems early on in life will ensure that they receive the appropriate support and assistance.
Children may not realise when their vision is poor and are less likely to mention visual problems. Some signs to look for are :
*  Eye Rubbing,
*  Sitting too close to the TV or a book,
*  Blinking a lot,
*  Eyes not always looking in the same direction; one eye may turn inwards, outwards, upwards or downwards, while the other eye looks forward.

If your child is showing any of the signs above, if you are concerned for any reason or if your child has never had an eye examination then please book them in for an appointment.
Many of our patients ask us whether children can wear contact lenses. There are many considerations for suitability, including compliance, hygiene, willingness to wear, proposed wearing time, the prescription itself etc. However, unless there are medical reasons to do so, we would normally wait until they are over eight years old before considering it. In the main, contact lenses will become a consideration when the child begins to pursue sports seriously at school, or is worried about their appearance as they offer a freedom that spectacles cannot. Please enquire at the practice, or contact us on 01279 652969.
